  1. The Americans selected Hiroshima and Nagasaki
  2. as the targets for the two atomic bombs dropped
  3. on Japan. Kyoto was also considered, but was
  4. rejected because it is the former imperial
  5. capital.  Nagasaki was chosen since a huge
  6. shipyard was located beside its harbor. The
  7. first bomb was dropped on August 9, 1945.
